Abstract
To improve outcomes for students with disabilities, it is essential to sustain a high-quality special education teacher workforce. We first provide an overview of common demands that special education teachers face and resources needed to outweigh these demands. Next, we suggest that professional development is one way to provide necessary resources to teachers. We provide an overview of types of professional development and effective professional development learning strategies. Finally, to illustrate a potential pathway from professional development to sustaining teachers, we propose the Professional Learning-Centered Model of Teacher Sustainment, followed by implications.
